The waist to hip ratio or WHR is a way to determine the fat storage in the abdominal and hip areas and is also a marker for health related issues.Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is one of several measurements your doctor can use to see if you’re overweight, and if that excess weight is putting your health at risk. The WHR is different from the body mass index which measures your weight to height. WHR calculates the ratio of waist circumference to hip circumference in order to determine the ratio of fat storage in those areas. In case of waist to hip ratio the the ratio for men is ideal when it is below 0.9 and for women it is ideal when it is below 0.85. People with a ratio above the mentioned number are at a higher risk of health issues. Not all excess weight is the same when it comes to your health risks. People who have more weight around their midsection of the body are at higher risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes than those who carry more of their weight in their hips and thighs. Even if your BMI is within a normal range, your risk for disease may be increased.
