Fat soluble vitamins is a range of vitamins that are only soluble in fats and not water. Vitamin C, B-complex are examples of water soluble vitamins while vitamin A,D,E,K are fat soluble vitamins. Unlike water soluble vitamins fat soluble vitamins are not lost when cooked. They are even stored in the body for longer period of time and hence are not advisable to consume for longer duration of time. Vitamin D deficiency is very common today as the exposure to sunlight is bare minimum. While vitamin D supplementation will be good option, one should also be careful about the dosages. Vitamin D is usually advised after certain tests to ensure that the dosages are given in the right quantities.

Fat soluble vitamins are stored on the liver and the adipose tissues and hence the requirement for them is low. It may increase in case of an athlete as their wear and tear is much bigger than normal sedentary person.

Certain vitamins like A, D require the presence of another element for their proper absorption. Vitamin D for example is best absorbed in the presence of adequate calcium and magnesium. While vitamin A is utilized best in the presence of adequate zinc. Hence make sure you consult a physician before you start a fat soluble vitamin supplementation in isolation.
